The promotion of food consumption behavior applying self-efficacy theory and social support among hemodialysis patients
Abstract:
Malnutrition is a common problem in hemodialysis patients. Appropriate food
consumption can prevent malnutrition and complications from retention of uremic
substances and minerals in the body. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was
to evaluate the effect of the promotion of a food consumption behavior program among
hemodialysis patients. The samples consisted of 32 patients undergoing hemodialysis
from 2 hospitals under the Department of Medical Services, Bangkok Metropolitan
Administration. The duration of the program was 8 weeks with a 12 week follow up.
Data were collected using interview questionnaires and 3-days food records. The
anthropometric measurement and biological assessment were compared before and after
the experiment. Statistic analysis was performed by using mean, standard deviation,
paired t-test and repeated measurement ANOVA.
Results of this study indicated that after the experiment, the sample group had a
mean score of perceived self-efficacy and outcome expectation on food consumption
significantly higher than before the experiment (p< 0.001). The number of samples who
had protein and energy intakes at the recommended level was increased. Whereas,
sodium, potassium and phosphate intake of the sample were at the normal limitation.
The assessment of body mass index and mid-upper arm muscle circumference showed
no significant change. However, the levels of serum BUN and potassium were
significantly lower than before the experiment (p< 0.01).
The results of this research indicate that a promotion of food consumption
behavior program applying self-efficacy theory and social support improved food
consumption behavior in of the sample group. The support from their families also had
an effect in sustaining food consumption behavior
