Effects of negative approaches applied to computer assisted instruction on aspects of learner involvement and achievement : a case study of using message warning
Abstract:
Traditional instruction often has features such as message warning which give students a negative instruction or warning while they are learning. These instructions remind students of the things they have not done or have not been able to do during the instruction. This raises the question of whether or not these negative approaches might actually have a negative effect on student learning through Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI).
This preliminary experimental research is aimed to study the effects of the negative approaches applied in CAI on aspects of learner involvement and achievement. Two versions of CAI on Introduction to Diagnostic Ultrasound Instrument were developed: CAI-1 including negative approaches such as message warning, and CAI-2 without the negative approaches. A non-randomised, control-group, pre-test-post-test design was employed. Thirty-eight second year Radiological Technology students of Mahidol University participated in the experiment. Answers, reflecting learner involvement were recorded, and the frequencies of these answers were tabulated. Opinions were gathered from teachers, CAI specialists and students through questionnaires and interviews. The results reveal no significant difference between groups on learner involvement; the significance of the two-tailed Mann-Whitney U test, p = 0.565, and for achievement, ANCOVA test, F = 0.18, .025F(1,35) = 6.18, and .975F(1,35) = 0.000249. There is no difference in students’ opinions between the groups. The specialists also believed that the negative approaches did not have a significant effect. Bearing in mind the scope and limitations of this study, the negative approaches applied in CAI affect neither learner involvement nor learner achievement.
