Effects of situational adjustment nursing support program on grief in pregnant women with miscarriage
Abstract:
This study had a quasi-experimental research design. The objective of the
study was to examine the effects of a situational adjustment nursing support program
on grief in pregnant women with miscarriage. The subjects consisted of 60 women
who have miscarried who met the inclusion criteria and were recruited from the
Obstetric-Gynecology Ward of Charoenkrungpracharuk Hospital. The experimental
group received a situational adjustment nursing support program, consisting of
emotional support, tangible support and informational support additional to usual
nursing care. The subjects in the control group received usual nursing care from staff
nurses. The instrument used in the study was the Prenatal Grief Scale (PGS) developed
by Toedter et al. The reliability of the instrument was 0.91.
The results of the study revealed that pregnant women with miscarriage who
received situational adjustment nursing support plus usual nursing care had Perinatal
Grief Scale scores lower before discharge than those who received only the usual
nursing care, with a statistical significance at the p < .001 level.
Based on the finding of the study, it is recommended that the situational
adjustment nursing support program should be utilized by health care teams to help
women who have miscarried decrease their grief and enable them to go through the
grief process appropriately without any major mental crisis
