Design, construction and evaluation of electronic journal database for retrieval via the internet
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to analyze, design, develop and evaluate
an Electronic Journal Database using client/server technology and a relational
database. The system is expected to increase the efficiency of administering data
entry and management of journal articles through web pages and enable controlled
browsing and searching of these articles by various users through the Internet.
In this research, MySQL was used for creating the system database. PHP
(Professional Home Page) was used for developing the application program
interfaces, running under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. The data consisted of articles
from 2 volumes of the Journal of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University Alumni
Association, i.e. Volume 5 and Volume 6 (2000-2001).
Users in the system are divided into two levels: administrators and general
users. After testing and evaluation of the system by administrators (3 staff of the
Alumni Association) and users (16 members of the Board of the Committee of the
Alumni Association), the results showed that the administrators were satisfied with
the journal and user management of the system and users were satisfied with the
search results. Finally, further development of extension functions and internet
functions are recommended for future work.
