Risk management of subsidence in the salt producing area, Huai Bo Daeng sub-watershed, amphoe Ban Muang, changwat Sakon Nakhon, Thailand
Abstract:
One of the major areas of subsidence in Thailand is located in the saliferous
fields in the Sakon Nakhon Basin in the Northeastern part of Thailand. This area has
been selected to be the research area, namely the Huai Bo Daeng sub-watershed,
which covers an area of 100 km2.
This research emphasizes risk management to reduce the subsidence problem
in salt producing areas. The process includes several steps; creating the subsidence
model, assessing for further subsidence, classifying the risk area, assessing the risk
area, assessing the source of risk and finding out a way to treat the source.
For the results of this research, a subsidence model and further subsidence was
done, ten risk areas were classified, qualitative analysis was used for assessing the
risk area, and the source of risk was analyzed by fault tree method. The way to reduce
the problem of subsidence in a salt producing area focused on the treatment method
“Centralize Brine Pumping System”; this method is based on the concept of using
the central pumping wells all together, controlling the number of pumping wells,
controlling the location of pumping wells, controlling the quantity of brine pumping,
and rotating the use of pumping wells. Results also recommend establishing a salt
producer organization for management and finding reserve funds to support any loss.
