The relationship between family coping and family well-being in urban area, Sathorn district, Bangkok
Abstract:
The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine the relationship
between family coping and family well-being in an urban area; Sathorn district,
Bangkok. The 100 families were recruited by purposive sampling from Kusolthong
community Sathorn district, Bangkok, from April 2003 to May 2003. A three part
interviewing form was used including sections on sociodemographics, Family Coping,
and Family Well-Being Assessment (FWA). Data were collected by interviewing with
structured questions. The statistical analysis used were percentage, mean, standard
deviation, t-test, one way ANOVA and Pearson,s Product Moment correlation
coefficient
From the results of this study it was found that the husband and wife subjects
most frequently used problem-focused coping at a level of 61% and 67% respectively
and emotional-focused coping (90%, 88% respectively). The perceived level of family
well-being was at a moderate level (76% and 81% for husbands and wives
respectively). Considering each dimension of well-being, according to husbands and
wives family structure was at a moderate level (73%, 81% respectively), family role
was a moderate level (58%, 60% respectively) and also family vulnerability was at a
moderate level (76% and 73% respectively).
Furthermore, it was also found that there were positive significant
correlations between family coping and perceived family well-being in both husband
and wife subjects (r = 0.35, r = 0.30, p-value < 0.01 respectively). Among husband
subjects, differences in sociodemographic such as education, occupation, and family
type significanly impacted on their family well-being.
These results indicated that the family whose well-being was low, would
tend to have family problems. Therefore, public health nurses, and health professionals
who are close to families should counsel and encourage these families to use
appropriate family coping techniques for stressful life events to maintain family wellbeing.
