The effect of a supportive-educative nursing program on knowledge, perceived self-efficacy, and strain from worry of caregiving among caregivers of patients with stroke
Abstract:
Patients with stroke have self-care deficits and self-care demands. Thus, the
family has to take responsibility as a dependent care agency of the patients with stroke
when they return home, which requires knowledge of caregiving and self-efficacy.
This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effect of a supportiveeducative
nursing program on the knowledge, perceived self-efficacy, and strain from
worry of caregiving among caregivers of patients with stroke. Orem’s self-care theory,
Bandura’s self-efficacy concept, and relaxation concepts were used as the conceptual
basis for the intervention. Purposive sampling was used to recruit a sample of 50
family caregivers: 25 in the comparison group and 25 in the experimental group, who
were giving care to patients after a first episode of stroke. All stroke victims were
admitted to the Prasat Neurological Institute during April to July 2003. The
experimental group received a supportive-educative nursing program four times within
eight days, including role adaptation of caregivers and knowledge of caregiving. Data
were collected before and after the intervention using the Demographic Characteristics
Questionnaire, Knowledge Test, Perceived Self-efficacy Scale and the Strain from
Worry Questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive statistics,
Student’s t-test and Pair-sample t-test.
Results revealed that after the intervention, the mean scores for knowledge and
perceived self-efficacy in the experimental group were significantly higher than those
in the comparison group, and higher than those before the intervention (t = 5.64, 5.07,
p-value < 0.001 respectively). While the mean score of strain from worry was
significantly lower than that of the comparison group, and that before the intervention
(t = 2.62, 9.11, p-value = 0.011 and < .001, respectively).
The research findings indicate this supportive-educative nursing program
should be used to improve discharge plans and to prepare family caregivers for
continual home care for patients with stroke.
