A study of the community business of a Siamese fighting fish farmer group at Bann Thong Sai Community, Laembua subdistrict, Nakhonchaisi district, Nakhon Pathom province
Abstract:
The study of the community business of a Siamese fighting fish farmer group
at Bann Thong Sai Community, Laembua Subdistrict, Nakhonchaisi District,
Nakhon Pathom Province had five main objectives: to study the background of the
community and the Siamese fighting fish farmers group; to study the management
of that group; to study the learning process, transformational lessons and
implications; to study factors and conditions which affected the strength of the
group; and to study problems and their resolutions encountered by the Siamese
fighting fish farmers group.
This study was conducted by using a qualitative research methodology:
informal interviews, structured interviews and participant ’s observations.
The study found that originally the villagers in this area farmed as their main
career, but when they had problems selling their products some of them needed a
supplementary career so they started breeding Siamese fighting fish and were
supported by the Office of Community Development. This office taught the
villagers to jointly participate in developing the community. The group of fish
breeders had good production procedures, investment in production, selling,
marketing, management and labor which attributed to their business success.
Operations were managed by the group of fish breeders. The main marketing
strategy was to sell the fish to domestic and international customers. Factors
affecting the operation included internal factors such as investment money,
management, selling, marketing, labor, leaders, and participation. External factors
affecting operation included: support by governmental agencies, the private sector
and public relations by the organizations outside the community. As a result of
the work by the fish breeders, it was found that the community business helped
upgrade the quality of life, strengthened the community, create more income,
better living conditions, and reduced necessary immigration to other regions for
employment. However a problem found by the group operation was that the
members did not understand the benefit they would achieve .
