Abstract: Final particles are very interesting to study because they make sentences sound more natural and their meanings clearer. Through the usage of final particles, emotions, feelings, politeness, status, and speaker’s attitudes towards the listeners are expressed. Failure to use final particles or abusing the use of final particles can create misunderstanding between the speakers and the listeners. This thesis analyzes final particles in conversational Myanmar used inYangon. The data were collected from contemporary novels and comic books, recorded movies, TV dramas, and conversations among native speakers. The syllable structure, the use of final particles, as well as their free variations are discussed. Sociolinguistic concepts, the social factors that influence the selection of usage of these final particles, were also included in the analysis. The study finds that native Myanmar syllables have the syllable structure of C1 (C2) V T. There are five types of syllable structures, ranging from monosyllable to fivesyllable. Twenty-six monosyllables, forty-two disyllables, eighteen trisyllables, four foursyllables, and two five-syllables are found in this study. The study finds that social factors involved in the selection of the usage of final particles are genders of the speakers, the status of the speakers and listeners, the intimacy between the speakers and listeners. Degree of politeness expressed though the usage of final particles is also considered. Other factors that are found to influence the selection of final particles are situations, objectives of verbal communication, feelings, and most of all-sentence modes, which include statements, questions, commands as well as warnings, and requests as well as persuasions. There are free variations in some tones, some initial consonants, and some vowels of final particles.

Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้เสนอการศึกษาการใช้คำ ลงท้ายในภาษาพม่าเนื่องจากเห็นว่า หมวดคำ ลงท้ายเป็นหมวดคำ ที่น่าสนใจหมวดหนึ่งเพราะช่วยเสริมความหมายของประโยค นอกเหนือไปจากเรื่องราวที่ต้องการจะบอกและแสดงให้เห็นอารมณ์ ความรู้สึก ความสุภาพ สถานภาพของผู้ใช้และทัศนคติหรือความสัมพันธ์ของผู้พูดที่มีต่อผู้ฟัง คำ ลงท้ายมีส่วนช่วยให้ บทสนทนานั้นชัดเจนและราบรื่นยิ่งขึ้น ประโยคที่ขาดคำ ลงท้ายหรือมีการใช้คำ ลงท้ายผิดไปจะ ก่อให้เกิดความผิดพลาดในการสื่อสารระหว่างผู้พูดกับผู้ฟังได้ ในการศึกษาการใช้คำ ลงท้ายในภาษาพม่านี้ใช้วิธีการเก็บข้อมูลจากนวนิยายร่วมสมัย หนังสือการ์ตูน ภาพยนตร์ ละครทางโทรทัศน์และการบันทึกเสียงจริงจากเจ้าของภาษาเพราะ ต้องการรวบรวมคำ ลงท้ายให้ได้จำ นวนมากที่สุด จากนั้นจึงนำ ข้อมูลที่เก็บได้ทั้งหมดมาวิเคราะห์ หาโครงสร้างพยางค์ วิเคราะห์การใช้คำ ลงท้าย วัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาครั้งนี้เพื่อที่จะศึกษา รวบรวมคำ ลงท้ายในภาษาพม่าและวิเคราะห์การแปรรูปแปรเสียงของคำ ลงท้ายจากการศึกษา วิเคราะห์พบว่าโครงสร้างพยางค์ในภาษาพม่าเป็นแบบ C1 (C2) V T และคำ ลงท้ายในภาษาพม่ามี ทั้งคำ ลงท้ายพยางค์เดียว คำ ลงท้ายสองพยางค์ คำ ลงท้ายสามพยางค์ คำ ลงท้ายสี่พยางค์ และ คำ ลงท้ายห้าพยางค์ โดยจำ แนกเป็นคำ ลงท้ายพยางค์เดียวจำ นวน 26 คำ คำ ลงท้ายสองพยางค์ จำ นวน 42 คำ คำ ลงท้ายสามพยางค์จำ นวน 18 คำ คำ ลงท้ายสี่พยางค์จำ นวน 4 คำ และคำ ลงท้าย ห้าพยางค์จำ นวน 2 คำ ส่วนการวิเคราะห์การใช้คำ ลงท้ายในภาษาพม่าโดยอาศัยแนวคิดทาง ภาษาศาสตร์เชิงสังคมนั้นพบว่าปัจจัยทางสังคมมีผลต่อการเลือกใช้คำ ลงท้ายในภาษาพม่า ปัจจัย ต่าง ๆ เหล่านั้น
