A language classification of Phuan in Thailand : a study of the tone system

Abstract: The objectives of this investigation were to analyze and compare the difference in tone systems and tonal fetures of Phuan in Thailand, and to utilize the study results as a criterion to classify the language and to draw up the geographical linguistic maps of the Phuan language in Thailand. The data were collected from 33 Phuan villages in 19 provinces scattered in the central, northern and northeastern regions of the country. A total number of 33 language informants with one representative from one village involved in this research. The tone boxes devised by William J. Gedney(1972) was employed for the investigation of tone split. Both instrumental and auditory judgements were used to analyze the data in addition to WINCECIL version 2.2 and Microsoft Excel. The research findings revealed that there were 5 and 6 tonemes in the Thai Phuan dialects with 8 patterns of tone system and tonal features. The dialects could be classified into 5 groups according to the split and coalescence of tones in columns A and C. The first group, A 1234 and C 1-234, was classified as the first pattern of tone system and tonal features. The second group, A 1234 and C 123-4, was classified as the second pattern of tone system and tonal features. The third group, A 1-234 and C 1234, was classified as the third pattern of tone system and tonal features. The fourth group, AC 1-234, was classified as the fourth, fifth and sixth pattern of tone system and tonal features. The fifth group, A 1-234 and C 123-4, was classified as the seventh and eighth pattern of tone systems and tonal features. It was found that the fourth group was the most prevalent, scattered all over the three regions of the country

Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อวิเคราะห์และเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างของระบบเสียง วรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์ ของภาษาถิ่นพวนในประเทศไทย และนำผลที่ได้มาใช้เป็นเกณฑ์ ในการจัดกลุ่มและทำแผนที่ภาษาถิ่นพวน การศึกษาครั้งนี้ได้กำหนดจุดเก็บข้อมูลภาษาถิ่นพวนที่พูด กระจายอยู่ทางภาคเหนือ ภาคตะวันออกฉียงเหนือ และภาคกลางของประเทศไทย รวม 33 หมู่บ้าน (19 จังหวัด) เก็บข้อมูลจากผู้บอกภาษา หมู่บ้านละ 1 คน รวม 33 คน โดยใช้ตารางคำทดสอบเสียง วรรณยุกต์ของ วิลเลียม เจ เก็ดนีย์ แล้วนำข้อมูลที่ได้ มาวิเคราะห์ด้วยเครื่องมือและการฟัง เครื่องมือ ที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์คือโปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์สำเร็จรูป WINCECIL และMICROSOFT EXCEL ผลการวิเคราะห์พบว่า ภาษาถิ่นพวนในประเทศไทย มีจำนวนหน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์ 5 หน่วยเสียง และ 6 หน่วยเสียง มีระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์ที่แตกต่างกัน 8 แบบ สามารถจัด กลุ่มภาษาถิ่นพวนจากการรวมตัวและการแตกตัวของวรรณยุกต์ในช่อง A และ C ได้ 5 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่ม ที่ 1 A1234, C1-234 ได้แก่ ระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 1 กลุ่มที่2 A1234, C123-4 ได้แก่ ระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์ และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 2 กลุ่มที่3 A1-234, C1234 ได้แก่ ระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์ และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 3 กลุ่มที่ 4 AC 1-234 ได้แก่ ระบบเสียง วรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 4, 5 และ 6 กลุ่มที่ 5 A1-123 C 123-4 ได้แก่ ระบบเสียง วรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 7 และ 8 ภาษาถิ่นพวนกลุ่มที่ 4 มีการพูดกระจายมากที่สุด คือพูดกระจายอยู่บริเวณภาคเหนือ ภาค ตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และภาคกลางของประเทศไทย
