Abstract:
This research aims at studying the alienation and the factors affecting the university faculty members alienation feeling in work. 382 faculty members from 8 universities namely Chulalongkorn, Kasetsart, Thammasat, The National Institute of Development Administration, Bangkok, Dhurakijpundit, Siam and The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce are selected for This study using simple random sampling method.
The variables under study consist of 5 demographic variables which are sex, age, education level, income level and tenure and 4 work structure variables which are participation, autonomy, formalization and routinization. Likert Scale questionnaires and in-depth interviews are employed in data collection. The computer program SPSS/PC+ Version 4.0 and statistical techniques such as percentage, means, standard deviation, T-test, F-test and multiple regression analysis are employed in the analysis of data.
The research reveals the followings : male faculty members have more alienation feeling than their female counterparts; elder faculty members have more alienation feeling than younger ones; those with longer tenure have more alienation feeling than those with shorter tenure; those with higher participation have less alienation feeling than those with lower participation; those with higher autonomy have more alienation feeling than those with lower autonomy; those with higher formalization have more alienation feeling than those with lower formalization; and those with higher routinization have more alienation feeling than those with lower routinization.
The most influential factors on the faculty members alienation feeling are the routinization and participation while the formalization has less influence and the autonomy has no such effect. Collectively, these factors explain the variance of the faculty members alienation feeling as high as 62.6 percent. (R2 = 62.6)
