Abstract:
This research aimed was to study and classify the general and specific desirable characteristics of middle level employees according to their significance as perceived by personnel managers of hotels in the eastern seaboard development areas. The middle level employees studied included personnel from the following departments ; accounting, room services, food and beverage, sales, personnel and engineering. Yhe instrument used in the study was a 125-item rating scale questionnaire. The questionaire was divied into two parts. Part one which contained 19 item was to assess general characteristics which included personnality, human relations, personnal conduct and general knowledge.Part two which contained occupational knowledge, working capability and experiences. The sample consisted of 60 personnal managers of 60 to 149-room hotels from Rayong, Chonburi and Chacheongsao. The statistics used in analysing the data were arithermatic mean and standart deviation. The findings were as follows: The general desirable characteristics of the middle level employees as perceived by perosonal managers of the hotels was at high level in all aspects. The fierst in the scale was personnal conduct which included honesty, responsibility and diligence. The secound was personallity aspect which included eagerness, activeness, well dressing and politeness. TYhe third was human relations which included capability in communication, devotion and cooperation with other. The last in the scale was general knowledge which included knowleges of basic English, Thai language and Thai customs. As for the specific characteristics, the requirement of every division was at a high level. Ranking in the first place was occupational knowledge and understading in what they wrer reponsible for : know about steps in accounting and the management of paper and documents room service personnel should know about customs and culture of customers, currents news and situation of tyhe locality, the plan to ues the facilities; food and beverage personel should know about techniques in serving, food perparing and utensis, catering: personel in sales department should know psychology in selling, advertising and public relations, selling plan; personel from personnal management department should knowledge and understading of the company's policy, hotel business, principles in public relations and communications; engineerings should have knowledge and capability in solving problems at work, know how to use and maintain tools and materials effectively, and be cautions for safety. The second was the capability in working such as; accountants should be able to solve problems at work intellingently, work correctly and quickly, be ables to type in Thai and English; room service personnel should be able to service and receive guests impressively, be good liaisons between hotels and guests, be able to coordinate with other departments; food and beverage personnel should be able to solve problems at work intelligently, use the facilities effectivelty, perform many duties in the department; sales personnels should be able to persuade customers to appreciate well in English; personnel frompersonel department should be able to convince the employees to follow rules, and regulations, work cooperatively with other departments and establish good relations; engineer should have throughness in working; be able to use new techniques to improve the quality of work, be able to use and maintain tools and materials effectively and efficiently. The specific desirable characteristices of middle level employees was "haveing experienced" such as acoountants should have working experince in accounting before, should have been through trainning and workshops accounting; room services personnel should have been through training and beverage department. before; personnel from food the institute of hotels and tourism, should have worked in foord and beverage services department before; saleas personnel should have experience in talking in public, have been trained in sales techniques before ; personnnel from personnel department should have been trained in the personnel development program, should have been experience working with other before; engineerins should have experience in decision making, should have experience wroking in the hotels before. Recommendation1. The result of the research which reflected the need for narious qualifications of the personne from different profesions should be taken into consideration in the improvement of curriclum and lesson plans for appropriatenss and in accordance with real neels. 2. Beside the certificates of class completion, schools with programs that require workshop trainning or working any other manufacturing firms should also issue spacial certificates to certify the working experience of the students.
