Child development in children aged 0-5 years and characteristics of care-givers at babies' home, affiliated with Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, in central region of Thailand
Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to examine the prevalence of development delay in babies aged 0-5 years and the characteristics of care-givers and related factors at babies homes, affiliated with Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, in central region of Thailand. The research design was cross-sectional descriptive study. The sample was 298 babies and 194 care-givers that had stayed in the babies homes, affiliated with Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, in central region of Thailand. The instruments were general demographic data, General Health Questionnaire (Thai GHQ) and Child development screening. All data were analyzed by the SPSS program to determine percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Chi-square test were used to determine factors related to child development and caregivers general mental health. The major findings were as followed : Prevalence rate of developmental delay in children aged 0-5 years at the babies homes was 42.9 percent. The factors related to such delay with statistical significance at P<0.05 was experiencing parental visit. And statistical significance at P<0.01 were age, movement, the activity received at the babies homes, time stay to real age ratio, first-in to present age ratio and girls height-for-age. The care-givers at babies homes are all female, with the average age of 40.427 years old. 65.6 percent of them have completed secondary level studies, 51 percent are married, and 70.7 percent have no physical condition. The prevalence of general mental health problems was 7.2 percent. Factors related to general mental health problems of care-givers with statistical significance at P<0.05 was physical condition. And statistical significance at P<0.01 was age.
