Abstract:
Nowadays, the design of signage systems is widely accepted and has great importance in many fields of study, in particular architectural design. The reason behind this relevance is that the signage system of a building must communicate information efficiently and attractively. Furthermore, due to the recent economic boom, building construction and renovation has been growing rapidly. Therefore, the objective of this research is to perform a comparative study of the fundamental elements of an efficient signage design system in modern and post-modern buildings. This research was initiated by the study of the architectural design of modern and post-modern buildings. The compilation of the fundamental elements of the signage design information system, which were shape, color, font, signs and symbols, was then used for a survey that was answered by experts. In the final stage, the results of that survey were then used for the comparative study. The conclusion of this study shows that the differences of architectural designs between modern and post-modern buildings have a great effect on the signage system. Subsequently, the research used this conclusion as a case study for the signage design system of commercial buildings (e.g. department stores). The Gaysorn shopping complex (modern) and the Amarin shopping complex (post-modern), were selected as a design guideline for the signage system of a modern and post-modern building.
