Abstract:
Based on the framework of cultural theories, this study aims to examine the cultural life of heavy metal fans in Thailand by investigating their group character, group formation and information accession. In addition, it also focuses on influential factors for their choice of music. Applied ethnography, participant observation, in-depth interview and informal conversation were used as methods for this study. The study found that Thai heavy metal fans very in terms of population and have a close relationship with each other using centralized and decentralized communication networks. The most popular group formation of Thai heavy metal fans is participation in live concerts which allows them to freely express their heavy metal identity. The study also found that their group formation expands to non-music-related activity resulting in the firm and long-lasting relations. Despite the absence of heavy metal news on mass media, heavy metal audience received the information effectively. Their communication and information accession are mainly made through the Internet where there are many websites about heavy metal available for them. In conclusion, psychological and social factor influence the way Thai fans opt for heavy metal music. It responses to their taste of music, gives them pleasure, and helps them express their identity.
