Abstract:
This research entails a time-specific descriptive study to analyze self-image of lower secondary school students in Bangkok congested area and the associated factors. There are 589 subjects randomly selected by using Multi-stage Cluster Sampling. In this study, the instrument was a set of questionnaires which consisted of 186 items about demographic data, self-image, and child rearing. Data was analyzed by SPSS for windows. Statistics utilized consist of mean, percentage, standard deviation, maximum, minimum, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe's method and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of the research indicate that self-image scores of most of the students were at normal level (68.4 percent). T-test and F-test indicated that factors significantly associated with self-image were younger age, high level of education, higher grade point average, school grade satisfaction, good health, high number of talents, good family relationship, high number of activities and time spend with family, democratic style of child rearing (p<0.1), mother's income, good relationship with friends, leadership role among peers and high number of activities and time spend with peers (p<0.05). From Multiple Regression Analysis, it was found that uninvolved parenting, democratic parenting, level of grade point average satisfaction relationship with father, permissive parenting, sex, relationship with friends and relationship with mother could explain the self-image of the subjects with a predictive value of 35.9 percent (R[superscript 2] = 0.359).
