The correlation between material chemistry and material physicalchemical properties a case study of mixed-metal Cobaltite spinel (MCo2O4; M Ni and Zn)
Abstract:
This present work has participated in the synthesis and characterization of a transition metal oxide material, Cobaltite oxide spinel (CoCo2O4 or Co3O4). Partial substitution of the cobalt content in the spinel by nickel and zinc generated the NiCo2O4 and ZnCo2O4 spinel oxide, providing more versatile materials for the chemical and electrochemical catalysis. The correlation between physical properties, magnetic susceptibility of the pristine and derivative spinel samples has been demonstrated. The effect of the cationic distribution and elemental composition of the derivatives on the material magnetization was revealed regarding the comprehensive analysis results. The assessment of the chemical activities of the spinel materials as a bifunctional electrochemical catalyst for ORR and OER reactions and as a chemical catalyst for toluene oxidation proved a potential use of the derivatives. Regarding the advantages of those cobaltite spinel derivatives, which are relatively cheaper, more chemically active, and more environmentally benign, this present work underlines the promising replacements of the pristine CoCo2O4 spinel.
