Investigation of Lignosulfonate as dispersant for stable suspension fertilizer

Abstract: In this research, lignosulfonates obtained from sulfide pulping are used as a dispersing agent to stabilize plant nutrient for suspension fertilizers in order to add its value. Three different types of commercial lignosulfonates have been studied in dispersing the plant nutrients for suspension fertilizer. They are obtained from LignoTech and Aldrich with calcium and sodium counter ions. The chemical structure of lignosulfonates was studied by FT-IR. The analysis of the FTIR showed similarity functional groups of all commercial lignosulfonates. UV-Vis absorption spectrum of all commercial lignosulfonates also showed the same maximum absorption wavelength at 204 nm. Lignin alkali,low sulfonate from Aldrich and Marasperse showed 10.49% wt. and 10.67% wt. of sodium ion content, respectively. Borrebind showed 6.70% wt. of calcium ion content. Borrebind could be more suitable and useful to use as a dispersing agent in suspension fertilizer due to calcium considered as a micronutrient for plants. The nutrient ratio of N: P2O5: K2O at 1:1:1 has been used for suspension fertilizer preparation. The optimum concentration of lignosulfonate necessary to stabilize fertilizer particles in 16:16:16 and 20:20:20 formulation were 5%wt. and 0.3%wt., respectively. They showed good stability, no phase separation during storage at room temperature and no ammonium gas after storage. These results indicated that lignosulfonate can act as dispersing agent in suspension fertilizer. The suspension fertilizer with 16-16-16 and 20-20-20 ratio of N P2O5: K2O were applied in chili and orchid, respectively The nutrient including; nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were accumulated in plant, soil, and water. Phosphorus in water was higher than standard which caused the eutrophication. Nitrogen and potassium in soil were higher than standard but they were not a problem of the environment. However, the prepared suspension fertilizers were better than the others commercial fertilizer in term of slower released and less effect on the environment.
