Investigation of interesterification reaction for produce biodiesel from jatropha oil
Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate interesterification reaction for biodiesel production from jatropha oil. By performing the experimental designed using Minitab program of 4 factors which were mol ratio of potassium methoxide to oil (0.2:1 3:1), mol ratio of methanol to oil (10:1 30:1), mol ratio of methyl acetate to oil (20:1 80:1), and reaction time (60 - 240 minutes) under constant temperature of 50 ̊C and 2 replications. The 54 experiments designed by Minitab program were performed. After the reaction were complete, Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) and viscosity were analyzed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) and viscometer. Finally, the optimum conditions of the FAME and viscosity were predicted by Minitab program. FAME of 97.02% and viscosity of 4.22 cSt were predicted at the optimum conditions at mol ratio of potassium methoxide to oil of 1.614, mol ratio of methanol to oil of 22.32, mol ratio of methyl acetate to oil of 22.42, and reaction time of 92.72 minutes. The experiments were performed at these optimum conditions and 98.20% FAME and 4.34 cSt viscosity were obtained with error of 1.02 and 2.76% respectively. Therefore, the optimum conditions simulated by Minitab program cloud be used for jatropha biodiesel production from interesterification reaction with 95% confident.
