Abstract: The human-wildlife conflict (HWC) in the Buffer Zone of Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve (JKSNR) was serious management concerned since the inception of the Reserve. However, no study has been done particularly in this reserve to assess the intricacy of the HWC. This research intend to find out HWC types, patterns, economic losses, traditional and community-based mitigation measures and local people's perceptions on human-wildlife conflict and culprit animals in the two Blocks within the buffer zone of JKSNR. Based on simple random sampling, 137 respondents from Bjee Block and 85 respondents from Sombaykha Block were interviewed using structured questionnaires. Focus group discussion was also done in both the Blocks to understand the HWC issues in depth. Crop damage and livestock depredations were the most prevalent types of HWC in both the Blocks. The respondents of Bjee lost 27 livestock heads to the wild carnivores and 21.39 tons of crops to the wild herbivores within the year 2016, while, Sombaykha lost 97 livestock heads and 16.41 tons of crops. The analysis on HWC pattern revealed that both livestock depredation and crop damages were severe in the summer season, with wild dogs accounting for 80% of the livestock kills and wild pig being the most common crop raider. The annual economic losses by the respondents of Bjee was US$ 49,057 with an average of US$ 358 per family, whereas, Sombaykha lost US$ 83,464 with an average of US$ 982. The traditional and communitybased mitigation measures to HWC were vanishing and needs to be revitalized urgently. The data revealed that 85% (n = 117) of the respondents from Bjee and 55% (n = 47) from Sombaykha hate wild pigs and 18% of respondents from Bjee and 48% from Sombaykha disfavor wild dog. The study recommended developing HWC management strategy with the inclusion of community-based insurance scheme, livestock intensification programs such as breed improvement, pasture development and improvement in herding practices to reduce the conflict. Culling of wild pigs under ecotourism program to reduce HWC and enhance the earnings of the local people was recommended. To understand the HWC in depth, further research on wildlife population dynamics, habitat utilization and behavior was recommended.
