Abstract:
This research was carried out to investigate the ability of biochars (BC1-BC5) in removal of manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) in natural waters. Batch experiments were conducted using synthetic wastewaters containing Mn or Fe at different initial concentrations (5-50 mg/L) and pHs (as-received, 4.0, and 9.0), with a constant BC1 dosage of 1 g/L. The results showed that removal efficiencies decreased with increasing initial concentrations. The removal mechanisms of Mn and Fe combined the effects of adsorption and precipitation. At acidic condition, the adsorption of Mn or Fe provided higher contribution on Mn and Fe removal than precipitation. As the solution pH became higher (basic condition), Mn and Fe removal were mainly caused by precipitation. Different biochars (BC1-BC5) were used to remove Mn and Fe in natural waters. Two sources of natural waters were collected from the ponds near gold mines in Loie and Phichit provinces, designated as HL and RT, representing Mn-rich (11 mg/L) and Fe-rich (37 mg/L) water samples, respectively. Experimental results demonstrated that Mn and Fe in natural waters were successfully removed by adsorption process using BC1, with removal efficiencies > 96%, while BC2-BC5 provided the removal efficiencies >92%. The Freundlich isotherm model fit well with the data obtained from Mn and Fe adsorption on biochars. The Freundlich constant (KF) and 1/n were 0.8774 mg/g and 0.28394 for Mn, respectively, and 1.3398 mg/g and 0.23684 for Fe, respectively.
