Effects of glass ceiling factors on career development among women athletes in Sri Lanka's national teams

Abstract: The present study was designed to the problem in identifying the effects of glass ceiling factors (organization, individual, family and cultural) on career development among women athletes in Sri Lanka's national teams. All the women athletes who represented and retired from the national teams in Sri Lanka in each South Asian, Asian, Commonwealth and Olympic games since 1995 to 2016 were selected as population and the respondents were selected under the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. A self-administered questionnaire was used as a survey instrument to record the answers and glass ceiling effects were taken as independent variables and women career development was taken as the dependent variable. All the independent variables portrayed a statistically significant association with the dependent variable. Even though a negative association was hypothesized between all these regresses and women’s career development, only organization was depicting a negative association with the dependent variable. Furthermore, the association among the independent variables were also statistically significant and most influential factor that affects women’s career development was organization while culture and individual were respectively given the impact on dependent variable. Family was not significant while other independent factors were in the model. Thus, the results indicate that the effects of external factors (age and past sport performance) on women’s career development may not be statistically significant while dependent and independent variables remained unchanged even after controlling the effects of age and performance. Taken together, these results provide solid recommendations to women athletes from amateur to professional level on how glass ceiling factors effect on career development in their professional life while addressing the invisible barriers that national women athletes were faced with during the development of their professional career after retiring from sports.
