Prevalence and associated factors of depressive disorder among the elderly in Thailand, 2019
Abstract:
Depressive disorder is a common illness among the elderly worldwide. The world's population is becoming elderly rapidly. Thailand is expected to achieve the status of a complete aged society by 2021. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence, describe the characteristics and distribution of depressive disorder and identify associated factors of the level of depressive disorder among the elderly in Thailand. A cross-sectional analysis was done using data from Thailand's Health Data Center (HDC). A total of 7,981 Thai patient records of depressive disorder who aged ≥ 60 years in 2019 were obtained. The prevalence of depressive disorder was 0.07%. According to the distribution, the highest morbidity rates was found in the northeastern (39.3 per 100,000 population). For multivariable analysis, the variable that had a statistically significant association with level of depressive disorder was age ≥ 75 years (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.82, p-value 0.01), a group of single, widowed, or divorced patients (AOR = 1.23, p-value 0.02), a group of patients with primary or secondary education (AOR = 0.80, p-value 0.02), patients with history of smoking (AOR = 1.45, p-value 0.02), patients with history of alcohol use (AOR = 1.48, p-value 0.02), patients with BMI 23.0-24.9 kg/m2 (AOR = 1.28, p-value 0.003), and patients with BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2 (AOR = 1.30, p-value <0.001). IMPLICATION OF THE THESIS Findings suggested that the government sector strengthen the responsible offices for early detection and treatment of depressive disorder. The completion of the record and report system regarding depressive disorder should be taken into consideration.
