Abstract:
Twelve crossbred lactating cows (>87% Friesian × local Bos indicus) in mid lactation were housed indoors in an open-sided barn and fed a total mixed ration (TMR). They were assigned into 2 experimental periods of non-cooling system under the indoor conditions as Control group and the consecutive period of cooling system with an automatic sprinkling and fan system as Treatment group. All cows were individually bucket machine-milked at 05.00 and 15.00 h daily. Daily means of indoor ambient temperature, black globe temperature, relative humidity and temperature-humidity index were 29.97 °C, 30.84 °C, 81.32% and 81.5, respectively. The results showed that physiological responses of the Treatment animals as rectal temperature (39.65v.38.65°C; P<0.01), respiratory rate (69.83 v. 42.50 breaths/min; P<0.01), skin temperature (38.65v.37.96°C; P<0.03) and sweating rate (236.7 v.202.77 g/ (m 2×h); P <0.03) were lower than those of the Control. The levels of blood glucose and triiodothyronine (T3) (P<0.05) among the cooling system were lower than of the control but blood urea nitrogen contents were higher (P<0.05) than those of the control. Feed intake, actual milk yield, milk protein and lactose contents among the cooling system were higher (P<0.05) than of those in the control. However, more feed intake was found in the cooling system, apparent NDF and ADF digestibility and population of R. flavefaciens were lower (P<0.05) than those in the control.). It is concluded that cooling system with water sprinklers and fans had a potential to decrease the severity of heat stress and hence increase feed intake together with higher milk yield under hot humid climatic conditions.
