Abstract:
This study aimed to identify a South Asian indigenous community perception of tourism impacts to support tourism development. The moderating effects of length of residence and distance from tourism zone that influence the perceptions also has been examined. A triple bottom line approach of tourism impacts (Economic, Socio-cultural, and Environmental) has been used to investigate the perception. This study adopted the social exchange theory (SET) to explore the perception of tourism impacts. Respondents were administered a survey questionnaire to collect data from 375 Chakma indigenous community members residing in Rangamati, Bangladesh. The data were analyzed with a structural equation model (SEM) using AMOS software. Results suggest that the perception of economic impacts has a significant influence to support tourism development and length of residence moderates the perception of economic impact but the distance from the tourism zone doesnt moderate any perception of tourism impacts. These findings can provide recommendations to all the stakeholders on how to improve the indigenous communitys support for tourism development and maintain the sustainability and competitiveness of the community and the destination. This study adds value to the extent tourism literature to find out an indigenous communitys perception of tourism impacts in a developing economy.
