Forecasting and risk analysis of Asian credit default swap index: implications for portfolio efficiency improvement

Abstract: This thesis explores the best forecasting model to predict Asian credit default swap spreads and examines whether including Asian credit default swap index in the portfolio can improve the portfolio efficiency by using new advanced financial econometrics. This thesis consists of two issues. To deal with the first issue, we apply threshold, Markov switching, Markov switching GARCH, and simple least squares methods for autoregressive and structural modeling and then compare the forecasting performance of Asian credit default swap spread changes among these models by conducting both in- and out-of-sample forecasts. The empirical results indicate that Markov switching GARCH structural model outperforms other models in predicting Asian credit default swap spread changes. Additionally, we also employ the robustness test to check the preciseness of the selected model. To address the last issue, we pursue portfolio optimization using copula based volatility models, namely multivariate copula, C-vine and D-vine copulas, and Markov switching copula, with Expected shortfall and Sharpe ratio to examine the role of Asian credit default swap index in portfolio risk measurement. We construct two portfolios, with and without Asian credit default swap index, named CDS and non-CDS portfolios and then compare the efficiency of these portfolios. The empirical results show that, according to the smallest AIC values, Markov switching Student-t copula is the best fitting copula model among our proposed models to optimize our portfolios. Moreover, the risks of equally weighted portfolio in all proposed copula approaches remarkably present that the risk of the CDS portfolio is less than that of the non-CDS counterpart which implies that Asian credit default swap index plays an important role in reducing the risk of the investment portfolio. In addition, based on the Markov switching copula portfolio optimization results, we can conclude that including Asian credit default swap index into a portfolio clearly improves the portfolio efficiency since, at any desired rates of return, the risk of the CDS portfolio is lower than that of the non-CDS portfolio. It also extends the range of investment possibilities in the efficiency frontier. Nevertheless, the result of maximum Sharpe ratio indicates that the cumulative return of the CDS portfolio is much less than that of the non-CDS counterpart. More importantly, we find that, by using the rolling window approach, different copula models should be applied in the model estimation, risk measurement, and portfolio optimization since the appropriate copula models perform differently well in each estimation.

Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์นี้ได้ทำการสำรวจหาแบบจำลองที่ดีที่สุดในการพยากรณ์เครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปสเปรดในเอเชีย และทดสอบว่าการนำดัชนีเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปในเอเชียรวมไว้ในพอร์ตการลงทุนสามารถเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพของพอร์ตการลงทุนได้หรือไม่ โดยใช้เศรษฐมิติการเงินขั้นสูงแนวใหม่ วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ประกอบไปด้วยสองประเด็นหัวข้อ ในการศึกษาประเด็นแรก ผู้วิจัยได้ประยุกต์ใช้วิธีการเทรสโฮลด์ มาร์คอฟสวิตชิง มาร์คอฟสวิตชิงการ์ช และกำลังสองน้อยที่สุดอย่างง่ายในแบบจำลองอัตถดถอยและแบบจำลองโครงสร้าง และจึงทำการเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิภาพในการพยากรณ์การเปลี่ยนแปลงเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปสเปรดในเอเชียระหว่างแต่ละแบบจำลองดังกล่าว โดยดำเนินการทั้งการพยากรณ์ภายในและการพยากรณ์ภายนอกตัวอย่าง ผลการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่า แบบจำลองโครงสร้างมาร์คอฟสวิตชิงการ์ชมีประสิทธิภาพในการพยากรณ์การเปลี่ยนแปลงเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปสเปรดในเอเชียสูงกว่าแบบจำลองอื่นๆ นอกจากนี้ ผู้วิจัยยังใช้การทดสอบโรบัสท์เนสเพื่อตรวจสอบความถูกต้องของแต่ละแบบจำลองที่ถูกเลือก การศึกษาประเด็นสุดท้าย ผู้วิจัยได้ใช้วิธีการหาการลงทุนที่ดีที่สุดโดยใช้แบบจำลองความผันผวนโดยวิธีคอปปูลา คือ มัลติวาริเอทคอปปูลา ซีไวน์และดีไวน์คอปปูลา และมาร์คอฟสวิตชิงคอปปูลา พร้อมด้วยค่าคาดหวังของขนาดความสูญเสีย และชาร์ปเรโช เพื่อทดสอบบทบาทของดัชนีเครดิตดีฟอลต์ สวอปในเอเชียในการวัดความเสี่ยงของพอร์ตการลงทุน ทั้งนี้ ผู้วิจัยได้ทำการสร้างพอร์ตการลงทุน 2 พอร์ต โดยในพอร์ตการลงทุนแรกได้รวมดัชนีเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปในเอเชียเข้าไปในพอร์ตการลงทุนด้วย ส่วนพอร์ตการลงทุนที่สองไม่ได้รวมดัชนีเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปในเอเชียเข้าไปในพอร์ตการลงทุน เรียกว่า พอร์ตการลงทุนซีดีเอส และพอร์ตการลงทุนไม่มีซีดีเอส ตามลำดับ จากนั้นจึงทำการเปรียบเทียบประสิทธิภาพของพอร์ตการลงทุนทั้งสอง ผลการวิเคราะห์พบว่าจากค่าเอไอซีที่ต่ำที่สุดมาร์คอฟสวิตชิงสติวเดนท์ทีคอปปูลาเป็นแบบจำลองที่เหมาะสมที่สุดในบรรดาแบบจำลองที่ทำการศึกษาในการนำมาใช้หาการลงทุนที่ดีที่สุด ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น ค่าความเสี่ยงในการลงทุนแบบถ่วงน้ำหนักเท่ากันของแต่ละพอร์ตการลงทุนที่ได้จากวิธีคอปปูลาที่ใช้ทั้งหมดต่างแสดงให้เห็นว่าความเสี่ยงจากพอร์ตการลงทุนซีดีเอสมีค่าน้อยกว่าความเสี่ยงจากพอร์ตการลงทุนไม่มีซีดีเอสอย่างชัดเจน ซึ่งบ่งบอกได้ว่าดัชนีเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปในเอเชียมีบทบาทสำคัญในการลดความเสี่ยงของพอร์ตการลงทุน นอกจากนี้ จากผลการวิเคราะห์การหาการลงทุนที่ดีที่สุดโดยวิธีมาร์คอฟสวิตชิงคอปปูลาสามารถสรุปได้ว่า การรวมดัชนีเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปในเอเชียเข้าไปในพอร์ตการลงทุนสามารถเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพของพอร์ตการลงทุนได้อย่างชัดเจน เนื่องจาก ณ อัตราผลตอบแทนระดับต่างๆ ความเสี่ยงของพอร์ตการลงทุนซีดีเอสมีค่าต่ำกว่าพอร์ตการลงทุนไม่มีซีดีเอสทั้งสิ้น และการรวมดัชนีเครดิตดีฟอลต์สวอปในเอเชียเข้าไปในพอร์ตการลงทุนยังขยายขอบเขตของการลงทุนที่เป็นไปได้ในเส้นกลุ่มลงทุนที่มีประสิทธิภาพอีกด้วย อย่างไรก็ดี ผลการวิเคราะห์แม็กซิมั่มชาร์ปเรโชแสดงให้เห็นว่า ผลตอบแทนสะสมของพอร์ตการลงทุนซีดีเอสมีค่าน้อยกว่าพอร์ตการลงทุนไม่มีซีดีเอสอย่างมาก ที่สำคัญกว่านั้น ผู้วิจัยพบว่าจากการใช้วิธีการโรลลิ่งวินโดว์ แบบจำลองคอปปูลาที่นำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการประมาณการแบบจำลอง การวัดความเสี่ยง และการหาการลงทุนที่ดีที่สุดควรใช้คอปปูลาที่แตกต่างกัน เพราะแบบจำลองคอปปูลาที่เหมาะสมแสดงผลที่ดีที่สุดแตกต่างกันในแต่ละการประมาณ
