Process of documentation and preservation of an endangered language : a case study of Moken on Surin Islands

Abstract: The ultimate goal of this research is language documentation and language preservation in the Moken community. Thus, the primary objective of this research is to identify and develop a process of collaboration between the linguist and the Moken community members to document and preserve their language and local knowledge. This research got very good collaboration from various stakeholders, both inside and outside the community, who were concerned with Moken language and knowledge preservation: the language revitalization program facilitators, Moken native speakers, the ethnic film maker, the teacher in Moken community learning center and the community primary-health center officer. From my grounded-theoretical fieldwork, the research suggested that the collaborative approach on language documentation and preservation had five stages to pass through: 1) partnership building, 2) Moken orthography development, 3) technology preparation and Native Speakers’ capacity building, 4) data gathering and eliciting, and 5) implementation and mobilization. From the effective collaboration of all partners, the native researchers documented over 90 Moken place names with 27-minute VDO and ecological knowledge around Surin Islands with a 20-minute VDO. Moreover, 20 folktales, 36 songs and 4 daily life conversations were documented. Selected data were implemented in activities for community language preservation, mobilization and publication. This research provides the collaborative method between linguists and native community members in language documentation and preservation work sustainability. In addition, all fieldwork data that meet international archival standards could be used and applied to both linguistic studies and arranging education for ethnic minority or indigenous students.

Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาและพัฒนากระบวนการในการเก็บบันทึกข้อมูลและ อนุรักษ์ภาษาในภาวะวิกฤตในประเทศไทย โดยมุ่งหวังให้กระบวนการดังกล่าวเป็นกระบวนการในการทำงานร่วมกันระหว่างนักภาษาศาสตร์และชุมชนเจ้าของภาษาในการบันทึกและอนุรักษ์ภาษาและองค์ความรู้ท้องถิ่น งานวิจัยนี้ได้รับ ความร่วมมือจากผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียต่าง ๆ ที่เล็งเห็นความสำคัญในการอนุรักษ์ภาษาและความรู้ท้องถิ่นของชาวมอแกนทั้งในและนอกชุมชนดังนี้ 1) พี่เลี้ยงนักวิจัยเจ้าของภาษา ศูนย์ศึกษาฟื้นฟูภาษาและวัฒนธรรมในภาวะวิกฤต 2) ผู้พูดภาษามอแกน 3) นักสารคดีชาติพันธุ์ 4) ครูประจำศูนย์การเรียนรู้ชุมชนชาวมอแกนหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์ และ 5) เจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณสุขชุมชน ศูนย์สาธารณสุขมูลฐาน ชุมชนชาวมอแกนหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์ จากการวิจัยภาคสนามเชิงคุณภาพแบบทฤษฎีพื้นฐานพบว่า กระบวนการทำงานร่วมกันในการเก็บ บันทึกข้อมูลและอนุรักษ์ภาษาประกอบด้วย 5 ขั้นดังต่อไปนี้ 1) การสร้างหุ้นส่วนในการทำงาน 2) การพัฒนาระบบตัวเขียน 3) การเสริมสร้าง-พัฒนาศักยภาพเจ้าของภาษาและการเตรียมการทางด้านเทคโนโลยี 4) การเก็บข้อมูล และ 5) การนำ ไปใช้ประโยชน์และการผลิตสื่อ นอกจากนี้ งานวิจัยยังพบว่ากระบวนการดังกล่าวจะประสพความสาเร็จต้องอาศัยการมีส่วนร่วมและความเข้าใจไปในทิศทางเดียวกันของผู้มีส่วนได้ส่วนเสียตั้งแต่ต้นของโครงการ อีกทั้งการเสริมสร้างพลังอำนาจให้กับเจ้าของภาษาในการร่วมคิด วางแผน และตัดสินใจตลอดกระบวนการถือเป็นอีกปัจจัยหนึ่งที่ส่งผลต่อความสำเร็จประสิทธิผลจากกระบวนการทำงานที่ได้มีการพัฒนาขึ้นมาในวิทยาพนธ์นี้ทำให้สามารถเก็บรวบรวมความรู้และภาษามอแกนในรูปแบบวีดีโอและข้อมูลเสียงได้ดังนี้ 1) ภูมินามภาษามอแกนรอบเกาะสุรินทร์จำนวนกว่า 90 จุด ความยาว 27 นาที 2) องค์ความรู้ทางด้านนิเวศวิทยารอบเกาะสุรินทร์ของชาวมอแกนความยาว 20 นาที 3) เพลงมอแกนจำนวน 36 เพลง 4) นิทานและเรื่องเล่าจำนวน 20 เรื่อง และ 5) บทสนทนาในชีวิตประจำวันจำนวน 4 เรื่อง การวิจัยนี้นำ ไปสู่รูปแบบการทำงานร่วมกันระหว่างนักวิชาการและชุมชนเจ้าของภาษาเพื่อสร้างความยั่งยืนในการบันทึกข้อมูลและอนุรักษ์ภาษา อีกทั้งคุณภาพข้อมูลที่เป็นไปตามมาตรฐานของคลังข้อมูลทางภาษาต่าง ๆ ทั่วโลกสามารถนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ต่อการศึกษาต่าง ๆ ทางด้านภาษาศาสตร์และการจัดการศึกษาสาหรับนักเรียนกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์
