Market Channel and Guidelines for Development of High Quality Beef Cattle Business in the Upper Northern Cluster 2 Region of Thailand : Case Study Ko Khun Dok Khamtai Cooperative
Abstract:
The objective of this study are to 1) study high quality beef cattle production in the upper northern region 2 area of Thailand, and 2) study the market channel of high quality beef cattle in the upper northern region 2 area of Thailand. This research is a qualitative research. A Case Study of Kho khun Dok Khamtai cooperative with members in the upper north region 2 of Thailand ( Phayao, Chiang Rai, Phrae, and Nan) was chosen. There were total of 437 members. The key informants were executives of Kho Khun Dok Khamtai Co. , Ltd. , the interview technique was used as instrument for data collection by using a specific selection method for 1) two persons in the company 2) wholesale high quality beef cattle entrepreneurs for one person 3) supermarket for one person. The descriptive method was employed for data analyzing to understand the industry. The results of research, according to the first objective found that the number of farmers who raised fattening cattle from 2015 2018. Also, there was an increasing rate of fattening cattle respectively. In 2018, the number of farmer who grew cattle increased to 437 people. At the same time, the number of high quality beef cattle in the upper northern region 2 area of Thailand tended to increased. In the year 2018, the total number of high quality beef cattle was 246. The agricultural processing business of Kho Khun Dok Kham Tai Co. , Ltd. has increased every year. In 2018, the farmers invested in business 22,856,641.98 baht, which was an increase of 121.04 percent in revenue. It was found that there were three main income sources, namely selling the carcass, which is the most popular selling method that generates income for Kho Khun Dok Khamtai Co., Ltd. selling cut meats. selling by-products. In 2018, Kho Khun Dok Kham Tai Co., Ltd. had similar total income of 26,202,739.83 baht, which was an increase of 115.12 percent. The most generating income products from Kho Khun Dok Kham Tai Co., Ltd. derived from carcasses, by-product and from trimmed meats, which were 90.75, 8.15 and 1.10 percent, respectively. According to the second objective of the study, the researcher found that farmers sold quality fattening cattle to Kho Khun Dok Kham Tai Co., Ltd., and then the cooperative processed the beef cattle. Then the company sold high- quality beef cattle in three ways, which were quality beef wholesale operators which accounted for 78.86 percent of the total amount of beef cattle supermarkets which accounted for 19.51 percent of the total amount of beef cattle and Ko Khun Dok Kham Tai Co., Ltd. is sold directly to consumers, which accounted for 1.63 percent of the total beef cattle volume.
