Abstract:
Taranaki Basin is currently the producing basin in New Zealand. One of the potential prospect was interpreted using 3D-seismic and well log data by Pogo Producing Company. During the analysis process, they described the claystone with interbedded sandstones of Urenui Formation. This is in the late Miocene as same as Mt Messenger Formation in Kaimiro that discovered oil in 1991. The well log information and samples of Arawa-1, which was drilled through this formation, shows some layers of porous sandstone with good porosity that have good potential to be reservoirs. This study would focus on simulating the acoustic impedance model using stochastic seismic inversion method to use for map distributed sandstone bodies and evaluate the potential of those sand bodies. The acoustic impedance model from stochastic inversion, well log data and cross-plot between p-wave velocity and gamma ray show that the Urenui Formation is separated into two parts. The upper part is interbedded sandstone in claystone. They both have low acoustic impedance. There are porous sandstone, sandy shale or shaly sand, and porous claystone facies in this part. The lower part is compacted claystone with high acoustic impedance.
