An inquiry into the motivation to study English abroad : voice from students and parents

Abstract: The study aimed to investigate the motivation of Thai exchange students to study English abroad and their parents’ expectations for sending their child to study English abroad. The relationship between the students’ motivation and the parents’ expectations to study English abroad were also examined. The participants were 200 exchange students and 200 of their parents. The research instruments were the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) which was developed by Gardner (2004) and a focus group interview. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the average level of students’ motivation and the level of parents’ expectations for sending their child to study English abroad. An independent t-test was used to find the relationship between students’ motivation and parents’ expectations to study English abroad. The findings of this study indicate the students and parents had highly integrative motivation to study English abroad and there were no differences between the students and the parents. The interview data reveal students and parents had highly integrative motivation to study English abroad.
