Abstract:
The study aimed to find out factors affecting swine contract farming (SCF) adoption and decision making in choosing contract company, and to study the impacts and the procedures to develop the SCF using three-phase mixed-method model research. For phase I: an exploratory study to construct both the hypothesis and questionnaire development based on in-depth interview and the conduct of focus group of the SCF and in-dept interview of non-SCF farmers. For phase II: the confirmatory study to test the hypothesis using a questionnaire to collect data from the sample group of 361 farmers, using purposive sampling samples, from 7 provinces in the central region; and phase III: the confirmatory study in reviewing the results of phase I and phase II, using semi structure interview. The results of the 3 phases showed that the factors affecting SCF adoption were based on 1) the economic condition, 2) the production quality, and 3) the farmer problem- the three factors explained the correlation at 34.6 percent by the quantitative study; meanwhile, the factors based on the qualitative study were 1) the usefulness, 2) the land, 3) the farmer experience, 4) the company contact, 5) the company services, and 6) environment impact. In terms of factors affecting decision making in choosing SCF company were 1) the company services, 2) the farmer problem, 3) the production quality, 4) the farmer experience, 5) the economic condition, 6) the environment impact, 7) sex- these factors explained correlation at 46.2 percent by quatitative study; meanwhile, the factors based on the qualitative study were 1) the usefulness, 2) the land, and 3) company contact. Regarding the SCF, there were effects on the economic condition, the social condition, and the environment. The procedure to develop the SCF was to seriously perform in accordance with either the set regularities or the company suggestions; the farmers had to develop themselves; and the government should monitor the fair contract between the farmers and the company.
