Abstract:
The essential oil from the leaves of Helianthus tuberosus Linn. was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). A total of 47 compounds were identified, representing 81.55 percent of the oil that consisted mainly of sesquiterpenes (72.19 percent). The major compositions were β-bisabolene (65.21 percent), phytol (4.17 percent), β-funebrene (3.12 percent), α-copanene (1.01 percent) and nerolidol (0.93 percent). The essential oil was tested for its anticancer activity against KB, MCF-7 and NCI-H187 cell lines, using the resazurin microplate assay (REMA). The essential oil showed cytotoxicity against only NCI-H187 cell line with IC50 value of 46.26 microgram per mL
