Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to determine cost and return on investment of farmers who produce hybrid corn seed under the contracts with the seed companies in the main growing season of 1989. The areas selected for this study were Amphor Muang, Amphor Pattananikom, Lopburi and Amphor Musklek, Amphor Phaputhabat, Amphor Kaengkoy, Saraburi. The majority of the seed processing plants of the companies are located in and nearby these areas. Since the companies have limited areas to produce the hybrid seed by their own facilities and most of the farmers in these areas are advanced in technology, it makes hybrid corn seed production by contract grower more important business in these areas. The area of each farm that used to produce hybrid corn seed is hardly more than 50 rais due to the policies of the companies to enable the farmers to manage their farm efficiently. The study showed that the total cost of hybrid corn seed production in 1989 crop year of the farmers in Amphor Muang, Amphor Pattananikorn, Lapburi and Amphar Musklek, Amphar Phaputhabat, Amphor Kaengkoy, Saraburi was 1,223.61 baht per rai on average. The average cash and non-cash were 864.62 and 358.99 baht per rai, respectively. The average production cost was 2.22 baht per kilogram. The farmers could sell the output to the seed companies at the rats of 4.50-6.00 baht per kilogram depends on the type of contract, the quality of seed and the season while the selling price of corn grain during the study period was about 2.75-3.25 baht per kilogram. The return on cost of production and the return on sales were 125.84 and 52.72 percent, respectively. The Break-Even point is 119.26 kilograms per rai.
