Abstract:
Most research in the professional development of teachers in the Asian context has chiefly concerned itself with the aim of minimizing administrative difficulties and allowing for smooth classroom management. Despite historical perspectives that in order to achieve language competence both organizational and pragmatic competence need to be attended to simultaneously, the latter is usually ignored and left to chance acquisition. However, recent literature indicates a drive toward the pragmatic development of the language learner on several pragmatics aspects. Although this is a blessing in its own right, ignoring the primary facilitator of language input especially in an EFL context, namely the teacher as recipients of explicit training in pragmatics in the second language needs rectification. This dissertation study was carried out to primarily address this issue and bridge the existing gap.
