Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study the roles of social studies teachers in developing the democratic behaviors of secondary school students in democratic model schools in 3 aspects as follows: (a) classroom activities, (b) extra curriculum activities, and (c) role model. The population in this research was 221 teachers and the samples were 870 students. The research tools consisted of two sets of questionnaires for the teachers and the students, an observation form, and an interview form. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and contents analysis. The research results revealed that: 1) the classroom activities: 87.7% of the teachers used news analysis, 86% used discussions, 87.8% used case study analysis, and 79.2% used projects focused on volunteering and community development as the means of instruction, the students indicated that these activities were often used. 2) the extra curriculum activities: 76.5% of teachers organized scouting activities and 81.9% gave students the chance to participate in the student council president and student club chairperson elections. 3) the role model: 32% of teachers modeled being just, non-biased, broad-minded, and being able to listen to students opinions, the students indicated that the teachers role-modeled regularly
