Abstract:
This paper aims to study and reflect on the application of distance learning approach in English language teaching (ELT) on the students academic achievement in their English subject and further studies the students and teachers satisfaction of distance learning. This study used a mix-methods design combining with both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. The study comprised 65 students and 6 teachers from the small size primary schools under Nakhon Si Thammarat Primary Educational Service Area Office 3, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The data were collected from three research instruments: the main research instruments: pre and post-tests, questionnaire surveys and classroom observations which were regarded as supplementary to the findings. The gathering of the data took five months from May to September in the first semester of the academic year 2013.The statistics that were employed to analyze the data were average, standard deviation and percentage. The research findings showed that distance learning approach benefited teaching and learning English in small size primary schools; it can increase the students academic achievement in listening, writing and reading ability in English. In addition, distance learning approach has also offered the teachers opportunities to learn more English and be more familiar with teaching methodologies in distance learning. It is found that the students and teachers were satisfied with this approach in four aspects as learning contents, teaching and learning process, learning tools and learning assessment.
