Abstract:
This research is aimed at surveying and comparing teachers and students opinions, in higher level secondary schools under the Curriculum and Instruction Department of the Ministry of Education, on the usage of the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and teacher's handbook. The book was written by G. Capelle and his team, and this research looks at its contents, teaching methods and text exercises. The survey on problems, obstacles, and recommendations are also included. The population of the research were 120 French teachers , teaching through the medium of the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and teacher's handbook, and 6764 students learning from the book from all parts of Thailand, including the Bangkok Metropolitan area, in the academic year 2000. Through the stratified random sampling process, 100 teachers and 2250 students were selected as the sample groups. The research instruments were questionnaires for the students learning French through the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and questionnaires for teachers on the usage of the contents, teaching methods and text exercises in the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and teacher's handbook. One hundred teachers questionnaires (100%) and 2106 students questionnaires (93.6%) were returned. Percentages, means, standard deviation, t-test and one way Anova were statistically used for data analysis through the SPSS program. For the students, the results revealed that : 1. The students gave their opinions on the usage of the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and the practical classroom activities at a moderate level.(5) 2. There were no significant differences at a 0.05 level in male and female students opinions on the usage of the "Fr?quence Jeunes" books. 3. There were no significant differences at a 0.05 level in the opinions of the students of different ages on the usage of the "Fr?quence Jeunes" books. 4. Students from the various class levels showed no differences in their opinions on the "Fr?quence Jeunes" books. 5. Students studying French in different years, showed significant differences in their opinions on the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book at a 0.05 level. Through Scheffe post hoc comparisons, between students with four years French learning experience and the ones who had not yet completed one year's experience, and also between students with three years French experience and those who had not yet completed one year's experience. 6. There were no significant differences at a 0.05 level between the students opinions who use only Fr?quence Jeunes and the students opinions who use Fr?quence Jeunes and other texts. For the teachers, the results revealed that : 1. The teachers gave their opinions on the effects of using the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and the teacher's handbook at the high level. 2. Teachers of different ages showed no significant differences in their opinions on the effects of using the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and the teacher's handbook. 3. Teachers of different educational qualifications showed no significant differences in their opinions on the effects of using the "Fr?quence Jeunes" book and the teacher's handbook.
