Abstract:
The objectives of this research was (1) to study the level of comprehension of sufficiency economy of the people in Khao Chakan Subdistrict Municipality, (2) to study their level of compliance with it, (3) to compare personnel factors affecting compliance with it, and (4) to study the problems, obstacles and impacts of such compliance. The sample used consisted of 350 respondents which were randomly selected from a population of 3,828 people. The tool used to collect the data was a questionnaire and the statistics used to analyze the data were percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and F-test.
The findings were as follows:
1) The people of Khao Chakan Subdistrict Municipality had a good understanding of sufficiency economy.
2) Their way of life was highly compliant with the concept of sufficiency economy, and each aspect studied was highly rated. The results showed significant differences, at the .01 level, when they were analyzed by age, educational level and total family expenses per month. Occupation also produced significant differences but at the .05 level.
3) A number of problems and obstacles to living a life compliant with sufficiency economy were identified. To begin, some people dont own any land or have a lot big enough to build a residence but not big enough for agriculture. Others simply do not have enough money to develop their land. In addition, high inflation rates affect their spending power. Living in accordance to sufficiency economy will still requite of life comply with them to buy consumer goods at times. The impacts of living according to sufficiency economy were generally positive. People reported more happiness, peace and harmony in their community. Some were able to save enough money in case of emergencies. Families were able to reduce their consumption to meet basic living requirements and were thus able to decrease their cost of living and save money. They also had more time for family and enjoyed activities together.
