Abstract:
The microvascularization of the common tree shrew dorsal lingual
surface was examined using the vascular corrosion cast technique
in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy. It was found that
the filiform papilla microcirculatory unit composes of capillary loops
arranged radially in basket-like pattern with larger diameter when
tracing caudalward. The fungiform papilla microcirculatory units
are scattered among the filiform papilla microcirculatory units having
extensive anastomoses of capillary loops on its distal end. There
are three circumvallate papilla microcirculatory units locating at
caudal end of the lingual body. They are surrounded by deep circular
furrows. In addition, a group of conical projection microcirculatory
units is found anterior to the palatoglossal fold on each side of the
tongue.
