Tone variation of Tai Lue spoken in Thailand

Abstract: The objectives of this study are to analyze and compare the tone variation of Lue dialects spoken in Thailand. Tone variation is used to classify Lue dialects into groups and to draw a linguistic map of Lue dialects. The data was collected from 45 villages in 7 provinces of the northern part of Thailand. Three informants were selected to represent each village, so a total of 135 informants participated in this research. William J.Gedney’s (1972) wordlist was used for collecting tone data. Tone features of Lue dialects are analyzed using auditory information and the computer software program “PRAAT version 4.5.12” as well as Microsoft Excel. The research revealed that Lue dialects are classified into two groups: 5- and 6- tone systems, resulting in 9 patterns of tone system and tone features. Based on the tone split and coalescences in column A the tone system in Lue dialects consists of 5 groups that are A1-2-3-4 (pattern 1 and 6), A1-23-4 (pattern 2, 7/1, 7/2 and 7/3), A1-234 (pattern 3/1, 3/2 and 8/1), A12-34 (pattern 4) and A123-4 (pattern 5/1, 5/2 and 9). It was found that the tone system and tone features of pattern 3/2 are widely distributed in Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang and Nan. The tone system and tone features of pattern 5/1 and pattern 8/2 are distributed in Chiang Rai. The tone system and tone features of pattern 4 and pattern 7/1 are distributed in Chiang Mai.

Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์และเปรียบเทียบการแปรเสียงวรรณยุกต์ของภาษาลื้อ ที่ใช้พูดในประเทศไทย และนำผลที่ได้มาใช้เป็นเกณฑ์ในการแบ่งภาษาถิ่นลื้อโดยนำเสนอด้วยแผน ที่ภาษา การศึกษาครั้งนี้เก็บข้อมูลภาษาลื้อที่พูดทางภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย 7 จังหวัด รวม 45 หมู่บ้าน โดยหนึ่งหมู่บ้านประกอบด้วยผู้บอกภาษา 3 คน รวมทั้งสิ้น 135 คน ผู้วิจัยนำตารางคำ ทดสอบเสียงวรรณยุกต์ของ วิลเลี่ยม เจ เก็ดนีย์มาใช้สำหรับเก็บข้อมูลเสียงวรรณยุกต์ การฟังและ โปรแกรมสำเร็จรูป PRAAT 4.5.12 และ MICROSOFT EXCEL ถูกนำมาใช้สำหรับวิเคราะห์ ลักษณะวรรณยุกต์ของภาษาถิ่นลื้อ ผลการวิเคราะห์พบว่าภาษาถิ่นลื้อสามารถแบ่งได้เป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ 5 และ 6 หน่วยเสียง มี ระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์ที่แตกต่างกัน 9 แบบ ตามการรวมตัวและการแตกตัว ของวรรณยุกต์ในช่อง A สามารถแบ่งภาษาถิ่นลื้อออกเป็น 5 กลุ่ม คือ A1-2-3-4 (ประกอบด้วย ระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 1 และ 6), A1-23-4 (ประกอบด้วยระบบเสียง วรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 2, 7/1,7/2 และ 7/3), A1-234 (ประกอบด้วยระบบเสียง วรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 3/1, 3/2, 8/1 และ 8/2), A12-34 (ประกอบด้วยระบบเสียง วรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 4) และ A123-4 (ประกอบด้วยระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และ ลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 5/1, 5/2 และ 9) ระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 3/2 มีการพูดกระจายมากที่สุดในหลาย จังหวัด ได้แก่ เชียงใหม่ ลำพูน ลำปาง และน่าน ระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และลักษณะวรรณยุกต์แบบ ที่ 5/1 และ 8/2 มีการพูดที่จังหวัดเชียงรายเท่านั้น เช่นเดียวกับระบบเสียงวรรณยุกต์และลักษณะ วรรณยุกต์แบบที่ 4 และ 7/1 มีการพูดที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่เท่านั้น
