Abstract: This study aimed to explore the ways Deaf people communicate, in particular the grammatical system of Thai Sign Language used in the educated Thai Deaf community. Data collected was based on 54 Thai Sign Language discourses (both monologue and dialogue) from nine Deaf persons who had completed the Thai Sign Language teaching course from Ratchasuda College of Mahidol University. This study applied the notion of structural grammar and developed on previous ideas used in the grammatical study of other sign languages. This study concluded that the discovery of the informative statement ending is the key to the analysis of the grammatical system of Thai Sign Language at the sentence level, including both below and beyond the sentence level. Five grammatical aspects were found to be the statement ending markers in Thai Sign Language discourses, i.e., 1) nodding, 2) role shifting, 3) using facial expression, 4) expressing the subject of the sentence, and 5) using signs to demarcate the end of a communicative act. Thai Sign Language sentence structures were found to be both simple and complex and included all the communicative functions found in spoken languages. As with other sign languages which have been studied, Thai Sign Language lexical signs were found to be composed of handshapes, location, movement, palm orientation and facial expressions. The morphological structure and the visual symbolism were analyzed at the level of the creation of a lexical sign. Classifiers, metaphor-based signs, name signs, initialized signs and borrowed signs exhibited distinctive characteristics in Thai Sign Language. In addition, the use of space and the non-manual features were found to be significant in Thai Sign Language.

Abstract: การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีในการสื่อสารของคนหูหนวกหรือระบบ ไวยากรณ์ภาษามือไทยในชุมชนคนหูหนวก โดยวิเคราะห์จากข้อมูลภาษามือไทยระดับข้อความ ประเภทเรื่องเล่าและบทสนทนาจำนวน 54 ข้อมูล ผู้บอกภาษาเป็นกลุ่มคนหูหนวกซึ่งได้รับการ ฝึกฝนเพื่อให้เป็นครูสอนภาษามือไทยจากวิทยาลัยราชสุดา มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล จำนวน 9 คน ทั้งนี้ ได้ประยุกต์วิธีการศึกษาจากทฤษฎีโครงสร้างและการศึกษาภาษาศาสตร์ภาษามือในประเทศต่างๆ จากผลการศึกษาพบว่ามีกลวิธีที่คนหูหนวกใช้ในการจบข้อความซึ่งคล้ายกับประโยค จำนวน 5 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1) การผงกศีรษะ 2) การเบี่ยงลำตัวเพื่อแสดงบทบาทสมมติ 3) การเปลี่ยน สีหน้า 4) การบอกประธานของข้อความและ 5) การจบข้อความด้วยคำศัพท์ภาษามือไทย ส่วน โครงสร้างภาษามือไทยพบทั้งโครงสร้างข้อความที่เป็นเช่นเดียวกับประโยคความเดียวและประโยค ความรวม รวมถึงสามารถทำหน้าที่ในการสื่อสารได้เช่นเดียวกับภาษาพูด คำศัพท์ภาษามือไทย ประกอบด้วยท่ามือ ตำแหน่ง การเคลื่อนไหวของมือ การพลิกหันฝ่ามือและการใช้สีหน้า สำหรับ กลวิธีในการสร้างคำศัพท์ภาษามือไทยได้วิเคราะห์ในเรื่องโครงสร้างทางหน่วยคำและกระบวนการ สร้างคำศัพท์ให้เป็นภาพ ทั้งนี้พบกลุ่มคำที่มีกลวิธีการสร้างคำซึ่งปรากฎเป็นลักษณะเฉพาะในภาษา มือไทย 5 กลุ่มคำ ได้แก่ 1) คำลักษณะนาม 2) คำศัพท์ภาษามือเชิงเปรียบเทียบ 3) ชื่อภาษามือ 4) คำศัพท์ที่ใช้การสะกดอักษรนิ้วมือ และ 5) คำศัพท์ภาษามือที่ยืมมาจากต่างประเทศ นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่าการใช้พื้นที่ในการทำภาษามืออย่างสัมพันธ์กับคำกริยา การเคลื่อนไหวของศีรษะ การใช้ สีหน้าและการเคลื่อนไหวของลำตัวล้วนเป็นองค์ประกอบในการทำภาษามือไทย
