Abstract: Due to the fact that the elderly live longer nowadays than before the age for having sex has lengthened accordingly. Normally, sexual activity in old age is an important sign of good health, but at the same time it is also criticized as inappropriate in the view of people in society. Sex is generally considered as something only for the young in Thai culture, so aging and sexuality research in Thailand is limited. Objectives for this research are to study patterns of sexuality, factors affecting sexual activity and any opinions related to sexual needs among the elderly in rural areas. Data collection was through a questionnaire given to 473 elderly aged 60 and over in 11 villages in 3 tambons or sub-districts in Kanchanaburi province. Ten in depth interviews were conducted to give additional information. Logistic Regression Analysis was used as a tool for studying relationships between all factors and sexuality in the elderly. The research showed that of 318 married interviewees one third were still having sex. More of the male elderly than females were still sexuality active and those men were having sex more frequently than the elderly females who were still having sex. But as age increased, frequency of sexual activity and stopping of sexual activity altogether increased. On average, the rural elderly had sex twice a month. The rural elderly tended to stop having sex at the age of 59.1 on average and women tended to stop earlier than men. Factors affecting sexual activity in the elderly are age, race, opinion on having sex and sexual needs. In terms of problems related to sex activities, most elderly believed that they had no problem. But among those who were faced with sexual problems, the male elderly had many more problems than in females. Research recommendations are 1) concerned government agencies should provide counseling centers for the elderly who still have sex and 2) campaigns for widespread acceptance that sexuality in the elderly is normal should be provided for family members, caretakers and the elderly in general.

Abstract: จากสถานการณ์ที่ผู้สูงอายุมีอายุขัยเฉลี่ยที่ยืนยาว การมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุก็น่าจะยืนยาวออกไปด้วย เช่นกัน การที่ผู้สูงอายุมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุได้แสดงว่าผู้สูงอายุยังมีสุขภาพแข็งแรง แต่การมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุนั้นมักถูกสังคมมองว่าไม่สมควร ทั้งนี้อาจเป็นเพราะค่านิยมในสังคมหรือวัฒนธรรม ดังนั้นเมื่อพูดถึงการมีเพศสัมพันธ์แล้ว คนมักจะนึกถึงเฉพาะแต่ในวัยหนุ่มสาว สำหรับประเทศไทยยังมีการศึกษาเรื่องนี้กันน้อยมากวัตถุประสงค์สำคัญในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุและปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุ รวมทั้งความคิดเห็นและความต้องการทางเพศของผู้สูงอายุ เก็บข้อมูลโดยการสัมภาษณ์ผู้สูงอายุชายหญิงที่มีอายุ 60 ปีขึ้นไป ในเขตชนบทจำนวน 473 คน ใน 11 หมู่บ้าน 3 ตำบล ในอำเภอหนึ่ง ในจังหวัดกาญจนบุรี ด้วยแบบสอบถาม และทำการสัมภาษณ์ระดับลึกผู้สูงอายุจำนวน 10 ราย วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้สถิติพรรณา (Descriptive Statistic) เพื่ออธิบายรูปแบบของการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุ และใช้สถิติวิเคราะห์ถดถอยพหุคูณ (Multiple Regression Analysis) เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุ โดยใช้ข้อมูลเชิงคุณภาพที่ได้จากการสัมภาษณ์ระดับลึกประกอบการอธิบาย ผลการวิเคราะห์ผู้สูงอายุที่มีสถานภาพสมรส 318 คนจากจำนวนผู้สูงอายุทั้งหมด 473 คน พบว่า หนึ่งในสามของผู้สูงอายุยังคงมีเพศสัมพันธ์อยู่ เป็นผู้สูงอายุชายมากกว่าผู้สูงอายุหญิง การมีเพศสัมพันธ์และความถี่ในการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ของผู้สูงอายุที่ศึกษานั้นจะลดลงตามอายุที่เพิ่มขึ้น ผู้สูงอายุที่ยังคงมีเพศสัมพันธ์อยู่ เฉลี่ยแล้วมีเพศสัมพันธ์ประมาณเดือนละ 2 ครั้ง โดยผู้สูงอายุชายมีความถี่ของการมีเพศสัมพันธ์เฉลี่ยแล้วมากกว่าผู้สูงอายุหญิง และมีร้อยละความต้องการทางเพศบ่อยครั้งกว่าผู้สูงอายุหญิง ผู้สูงอายุจะหยุดการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ที่อายุเฉลี่ยประมาณ 59.1 ปี โดย ผู้สูงอายุหญิงจะหยุดการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ก่อนผู้สูงอายุชาย ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุ คือ อายุ เชื้อชาติ ความคิดเห็นเกี่ยวกับการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุ และความต้องการทางเพศ ในด้านของปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ ผู้สูงอายุส่วนมากคิดว่าตนเองไม่มีปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ และในกลุ่มของผู้ที่มีปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการมีเพศสัมพันธ์นั้นพบว่า ผู้สูงอายุชายมีปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการมีเพศสัมพันธ์มากกว่าผู้สูงอายุหญิง ข้อเสนอแนะในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ คือ ควรมีหน่วย/ศูนย์ให้คำปรึกษาเกี่ยวกับปัญหาของผู้สูงอายุที่ยังคงมีเพศสัมพันธ์อยู่ และควรรณรงค์ให้มีการปรับเปลี่ยนความคิดหรือทรรศนะเกี่ยวกับการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงแก่บุคคลทั่วไป ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ลูกหลาน ครอบครัว ผู้ดูแล รวมทั้งตัวผู้สูงอายุเองให้เข้าใจ และยอมรับเรื่องการมีเพศสัมพันธ์ในวัยสูงอายุ
