Abstract:
This study reflects a picture of alcohol consumption behavior of female adolescents by applying symbolic interaction theory and social learning theories in developing a conceptual research framework. Qualitative research was employed selecting the research sites and the studied population was purposively selected in Ranong Province. A case study of 10 female adolescents who presently consume alcoholic beverages, aged between 15-24 years, was carried out in vocational training colleges in Ranong Province. The data were collected over four months by using observation and in-depth interviews. Data analysis was done using the contents of evidence. The study showed that the first consumption of alcohol by female adolescents was at an average age of 16 years. A high percentage started drinking when they came to stay in their dormitory (80%) while 20 percent had consumed alcohol before coming to their dormitory. The female adolescents could be classified to four groups: the group that likes to go out during the night time, the party group, the group that has personal problems and the curiosity group. The stages of the process of drinking behavior are composed of three steps: the first experience, learning and self-adjustment and finally, acceptance. The onset (beginning) of alcohol drinking behavior among female adolescents was caused by three factors: persuasion (the group that likes to go out and the party group); having personal problems (the group that has personal problems), and wanting to try new things (the curiosity group). The female adolescents, meanings and values of alcohol indicated they believed drinking behavior is not immoral; it communicates modernity and coolness, female skillfulness; it is a joyful experience, social activities of a female group; and it builds confidence and the means to cope with problems. Female adolescents can drink alcohol at any opportunity; they usually drink with their close friends and their boy-friends. The places where they usually have alcohol are: college dormitory, restaurants, grocery stores, and natural sight-seeing places. Regarding the frequency of consumption, they consumed 2-3 times per month or every month. The kinds of alcohol they consume are: wine cooler, beer and various kinds of liquor. The quantity of alcohol consumed depends on the preference of taste, physical condition and the amount of pocket money.
