Analysis of communicative functions language forms and grammatical structures of advertisment headlines in daily English newspapers in 2000
Abstract:
This study was aimed at investigating language forms, communicative functions and grammatical structures of advertisement headlines. Four hundred technology and tourism advertisement headlines systematically selected from the Bangkok Post and The Nation in 2000 were used as the subjects of this study. The subjects were analyzed in terms of (a) language forms: indirect, direct, news, how to, question, command, reason-why, and testimonial; (b) communicative functions: declaring, commanding, informing provoking, promising, and clustering; (c) grammatical structure: simple, complex, compound, and phrase. The main finding of this study were as follows: first, an indirect form was most frequently used in writing both technology and tourism advertisement headlines, followed by direct, news and commanding forms. Second, a provoking function was mostly used to draw attention of the reader, even found in the clusters of function of headlines. Third, most advertisement headlines were written in phrases and simple sentences structures. Finally the analysis of forms and function of advertisement headlines showed a high correlation (over 80 percent) between the indirect form and the provoking function.
