Abstract:
The rapport of Thailand and Norway is a composition inspired from a journey to Norway and Sri Lanka in 1999 to promote Thai music in a workshop forum. Dr. Bussakorn, the composer, has adapted the Thai music composing method called Augmentation and Diminution to develop this piece by adopting from the Norwegian Dance No.2. This Dance No. 2 is the most famous folksong in Norway that was composed by the well-known composer Edward Grieg. The Rapport of Thailand and Norway consists of 7 parts. The introduction starts with a drum ensemble to imitate the drumming of Sri Lanka. The first part expresses the Fri Lankan and other foreign dialects. The expression in this part is one of coldness and loneliness to mirror the feeling from the composer wintertime trip to Norway. The second part consists of frequent notes in order to reflect the hurried growth associated with the warm and bright arrival of spring. The third part is comprised of two reflective groups of musical instruments in a questioning and answering style. The forth part is the traditional Norwegian Dance No. 2 that the composer uses to show the original piece that has inspired her to compose a Thai rendition. The fifth part is the Thai version of the second half of the original Dance No. 2 in which some of the notes have been changed to highlight the Thai variation pattern. In part 6, the composer has intended to represent the Norwegian folksong rhythmie pattern. The melody in Part 7 is similar to part 6 but the tempo is faster. The composer would like it to express the good collaborative and hard working atmosphere found in a group of diverse people with a common bond. This composition is valuable in terms of being a historical record of a great rapport experienced between the people of Thailand and Norway. The Rapport of Thailand and Norway has been presented to the Thai people many times and received a warm positive response. It has also been used as an example of using the academic approach to music compositions in Thai Universities. Moreover, the composer has been invited to present her work at the October 2003 Grieg Festival by the Edward Grieg Association in Oslo. Norway.
